Republicans in Congress are set to launch the “Weaponization of the Federal Government” subcommittee led by Rep. Jim Jordan to investigate how the executive branch gathers information on American citizens.
The committee, one of the concessions created by Rep. Matt Gaetz and his 19 holdouts for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, will also examine how the federal government utilized private sector companies, such as Twitter, “to facilitate action against American citizens.”
If formed, it will be officially titled “The Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government” and will be composed of up to 13 members of Congress led by Jordan, who will also serve as the chair of the House Judiciary Committee.
Separate reports suggest that the formation of the committee was partially due to revelations stemming from the “Twitter Files,” which uncovered the federal government’s efforts to censor American citizens on social media platforms to hide the truth about numerous subjects in the name of fighting “misinformation.”
Among items censored at the behest of the government were claims and evidence of election fraud, truthful and accurate reporting about Hunter Biden’s laptop, and COVID-19 policy criticisms.
In addition to censorship and information gathering, the committee could potentially investigate “the politicization of the FBI,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, and the Justice Department’s attacks on parents concerned with school boards pushing critical race theory.
Jordan’s committee has been likened to the 1970’s Church Committee led by Sen. Frank Church, D-Idaho, who investigated Executive Branch abuses by the Central Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Internal Revenue Service.

The formation of committees comes as Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was elected House Speaker for the 118th Congress after the longest fight for the position since the civil war, going to 15 rounds before being decided last week, Valiant News reported.
